About the two formats
HEIC
HEIC is the format iPhones save photos in by default. It keeps photos small, but many computers, websites and forms still can’t open it.
AVIF
AVIF uses compression from the AV1 video codec and usually makes the smallest image files of any common format. Browser support is broad, but desktop apps are still catching up.
How to convert HEIC to AVIF
- 1Add your HEIC files.
- 2Adjust the quality if you like.
- 3Download the AVIF files.
Questions
Do my files get uploaded?
No. HEIC to AVIF runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Close the tab and they're gone.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no daily limits and no watermark on your files.
Why choose AVIF over JPG for iPhone photos?
For websites, AVIF keeps the small size you get from HEIC. Choose JPG instead if the photo is going to an app, form or person who may not open AVIF.
