AVIF vs PNG

PNG gives you a lossless, universally supported copy for editing, and it keeps transparency. Expect a much larger file than the AVIF.

About the two formats

AVIF

AVIF uses compression from the AV1 video codec and usually makes the smallest image files of any common format. Browser support is broad, but desktop apps are still catching up.

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no quality loss, and supports transparent backgrounds. That makes it ideal for graphics and screenshots, but photos saved as PNG are very large.
